Episode Description:

SAM AND DEAN INVESTIGATE MONSTER FAMILIES IN CHICAGO — Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a case in Chicago, where they discover that various mafia-esque monster families are, unknown to humans, running the underbelly of Chicago. One is a family of shapeshifters run by Margo Lassiter (guest stars Danielle Savre), whose leadership is thrown into question when her brother David (guest star Nathaniel Buzolic) returns home. The other reigning family in town is made up of werewolves, lead by Julian Duval (guest star Sean Faris). While in Chicago, Sam and Dean meet Ennis (guest star Lucien Laviscount), a man with a personal vendetta against the monsters. The Winchesters warn Ennis about heading into the hunter lifestyle, but Ennis refuses to listen and starts down a dangerous path.

Robert Singer directed the episode written by Andrew Dabb (#920).

‘Supernatural’: Jensen Ackles dishes on the Season 10 renewal, spinoff episode and more

“Supernatural” fans were over the moon when news of The CW’s long-running drama earned an early renewal. And Jensen Ackles — who plays Dean Winchester — felt the same way when he heard the news that he was getting a Season 10.

“As you know, this is the tenth time we’ve gotten that phone call. I will say, it never gets old,” Ackles tells Zap2it with a laugh. “It’s always a very sweet phone call to get. We’re excited.”

Ackles is looking forward to seeing where the series will go in the future based on Season 9’s success so far. “After looking at what the reaction has been this season, we’ve seen some of the highest ratings that we’ve ever had, I think people are really starting to respond, or they’re responding more,” Ackles says. “It’s nice that after nine seasons, instead of sizzling out, it actually seems to be building up speed. I don’t know how that happened, but it happened and we’re happy for it.”

In addition to the renewal, “Supernatural” also spawned a spinoff series, “Supernatural: Bloodlines.” The backdoor pilot for the potential new series will air as an episode of “Supernatural” on Tuesday, April 29, and will feature a whole new, never-before-seen cast of characters.

Dean and his younger brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) will be a part of the pilot episode to kick off the new series. “Sam and Dean head to Chicago on a regular job, and even though the relationship is as strained as it is right now, they still agree to work together and do what they can,” Ackles teases. “So they show up in Chicago and find some very interesting characters and a very interesting situation.”

But don’t worry, “Supernatural” fans: The parent series won’t be losing any of its original stars to the new spinoff.

“Unfortunately [Sam and Dean] have got bigger fish to fry so they can’t necessarily stick around and investigate more,” Ackles reveals. “They’d like to, but they can’t. So they’ve got to say, like, ‘Hey, we’ll call in some backup and get you some help, but we’ve got stuff to do.’ So that’s how that whole situation is introduced. But as far as the relationship between Sam and Dean, they put their issues aside and just go to work. That’s how we see them in that episode.”

“Supernatural” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.

Danielle Savre & Stephen Martines Set For Lead Roles In ‘Supernatural’ Spinoff

Danielle Savre (Heroes) is set as one of the female leads in Supernatural: Tribes, the CW’s planted Supernatural spinoff, which will air as an episode of the veteran sci-fi series on April 29. Also set for a lead role in the project is former Vampire Diaries recurring player Stephen Martines, who will be joining fellow TVD alums Nathaniel Buzolic and Sean Faris as well as Lucien Laviscount. Savre, repped by TalentWorks and Zero Gravity, plays Margo, the acting head of the leading shapeshifter family, an ex-punk rocker-turned-corporate professional who feels threatened only by the return of her prodigal brother David (Buzolic) into the family. Martines, repped by Global Artists Agency, Luber Roklin and Chad Christopher, plays Detective Freddie Costa, a world-weary Chicago cop who serves as a mentor to Ennis (Laviscount) but also is secretly on the payroll of one of the powerful monster families.

CW’s ‘Supernatural’ Spinoff Casts Melissa Roxburgh As Female Lead, Gets New Title

Following a lengthy casting process, Melissa Roxburgh has landed the female lead of Violet in the planted Supernatural spinoff, now titled Supernatural: Bloodlines (formerly Tribes). Like her new co-stars Nathaniel Buzolic, Sean Faris and Stephen Martines, who all previously recurred on The Vampire Diaries, Roxburgh too has appeared on hit CW series before. She has done an arc on Arrow and a guest stint on the mothership Supernatural series. Written by Andrew Dabb and directed by Robert Singer, Supernatural: Bloodlines revolves around the various mafia-esque monster families that unknowingly to humans “run” the underbelly of Chicago and are being tracked by a newly minted Hunter who’s trying to stop them and rid Chicago of anything or anyone supernatural. Roxburgh’s Violet is a member of the powerful werewolf pack who hides her true nature because of her forbidden love for family rival David (Bozulic). But when cornered, her inner wolf breaks free. The Bloodlines Supernatural episode airs on April 29. Roxburgh is with Gersh.

Nathaniel Buzolic & Lucien Laviscount Land The Leads In CW’s ‘Supernatural’ Spinoff

Aussie Nathaniel Buzolic and Brit Lucien Laviscount have landed the leads in Supernatural: Tribes, the planted Supernatural spinoff, which will air as an episode of the veteran sci-fi series on April 29. The choices blend the CW‘s strategies of casting standout players from its existing series as pilot leads, which is the case with Buzolic, a recurring on The Vampire Diaries and guest star on offshoot The Originals in his role as Kol, as well as bringing completely new faces, like Laviscount, whose only U.S. series credit is an arc on the BBC/Showtime comedy Episodes. Other recent examples include Arrow star Stephen Amell, who first appeared on TVD, and the star of last year’s The Selection pilot, Yael Groblas, who had no previous U.S. credits. (She now recurs on the CW’s Reign.) The CW also first cast Laviscount in The Selection last year, making this his second CW pilot in a row. Buzolic and Laviscount also continue the trend of overseas actors getting pilot leads this season.

Written by Andrew Dabb and directed by Robert Singer, Supernatural: Tribes is described as a sweeping drama about the various mafia-esque monster families that unknowingly to humans “run” the underbelly of Chicago and who are being tracked by a newly minted Hunter who’s trying to stop them and rid Chicago of anything or anyone supernatural. Buzolic plays David Hayden, a shapeshifter from one of Chicago’s ruling monster families who has been living as a human, having given up the monster life years ago. Laviscount plays Ennis Roth. When his fiancée is killed in the crossfire of the monster war, the resolute police academy trainee learns the truth about what lurks in the shadows and becomes a monster-hunter himself.

Do you have any scoop on the Supernatural spin-off? — Jonah
Supernatural: Tribes will air its backdoor pilot in the 20th episode of this season and longtime SPN fans will notice more than a few similarities to the original series’ pilot. After the death of a loved one, the show’s protagonist, Ennis, is dragged into the world of hunting and monsters. It comes as no surprise that Sam is far more sympathetic to the wannabe cop than his brother when they run into Ennis working a case in Chicago. And while Tribes lacks Supernatural’s beloved sibling angst, Ennis has his fair share of Winchester-level daddy issues.

Pilot for CW’s ‘Supernatural’ spinoff will briefly film in Chicago (updated)

The CW announced last week that long running drama “Supernatural” may get a spinoff. And unlike the original, which follows brothers Dean and Sam Winchester as they hunt ghosts and monsters all over the country, the potential spinoff, “Supernatural: Tribes,” would take place in Chicago.

According to sources, the spinoff will be introduced as a backdoor pilot in the 20th episode of the current “Supernatural” season (“Chicago Fire” did the same thing with its spinoff, “Chicago PD”). The majority of the pilot episode will film in Vancouver, which is where the original “Supernatural” is filmed, but shooting will also take place for three or four days in Chicago in late-March.

Entertainment Weekly quoted “Supernatural” executive producer Robert Singer as saying “Tribes” would “explore the clashing monster and human characters.” He added “we’ll have main characters who are both human and monsters (and) families of monsters and families of hunters. … It’s much more of an ensemble than ‘Supernatural.’ ”

Viewers will meet the spinoff’s monster-hunter, Ennis Roth, the son of a cop, when he runs into “Supernatural” protagonists Sam and Dean Winchester in the pilot, reported TV Line.

Supernatural Spin-Off Exclusive: Meet the Werewolves, Shifters and Hunters of Tribes

The Windy City is on the brink of all-out war.

New intel has surfaced about The CW’s Chicago-based planted Supernatural spin-off, Supernatural: Tribes, and it points to an epic battle involving five rival monster families and a vengeance-seeking hunter.

Read on for exclusive details on the key players populating the offshoot (all of whom will be introduced in this season’s 20th episode of Supernatural).

ENNIS ROTH | The de-facto star of the potential series, Ennis is “likeable, strong-willed, resolute, with a strong sense of justice.” He’s the son of a cop who grew up in poverty. He’s en route to the police academy himself when someone he is close to is murdered — presumably by some kind of monster. He meets up with Sam and Dean and “learns the staggering truth” that Chicago is run by five families of monsters (including, but perhaps not limited to, werewolves and shape shifters). And with that, a new monster-hunter is born. Fun fact: Producers are looking to fill this role with an African-American actor in his early 20s.

DAVID HAYDEN | A shape-shifter from one of Chicago’s ruling monster families. He’s been living as a human for some time, but a tragedy propels him back into the life. David is in his early 20s.

MARGO HAYDEN | David’s “professional, strong-willed, determined, ambitious” shape-shifter sister. She’s an “ex-punk rocker gone corporate” who sets out to be the new head of the family in the wake of a tragedy. Margo is in her early 20s.

VIOLET DURANT | A werewolf and part of the wealthy, powerful Durant family. In a twist right out of West Side Story, the early-twentysomething is hot for family rival David (see above), but their love is forbidden.

JULIAN DURANT | Violet’s “savagely handsome, strong, arrogant” twentysomething brother and Ennis’ arch nemesis.

FREDDIE COSTA | A world-weary copy in his 30s, Freddie has a soft spot in his heart for Ennis (he knew his dad back in the day). Fun fact: Freddie’s got a secret.
