“One of the things you evaluate when you talk about bringing someone back in a big way is, whether there are new ways to be telling stories with this particular character,” Carver says. “And I can’t tell you much, but I can absolutely, definitively say that with Castiel — yes, there’s a new way to tell his story. We’ll get a very large hint about that in the finale. I think fans are going to be really intrigued.”

With an episode title like “Sacrifice,” it’s clear that Sam and Dean’s mission to close the gates of Hell won’t exactly end with sunshine and rainbows. Besides dealing with Crowley and Naomi, the Winchester boys will also have to push themselves in directions they never imagined. “Things are starting to spiral out of control,” executive producer Jeremy Carver says. “They’re going to have to figure out, more than ever, how far they’re willing to go to get this revenge.” Meanwhile, Castiel will also resurface with Heaven’s best interests in mind. (Or are they Naomi’s interests?) Plus: Sam’s Season 1 love interest Sarah Blake (Taylor Cole) may not be the only familiar face returning.

Carver on Sam doing the trials:

Being the one to complete the trials was essential for completing Sam’s arc of the season. It helps to establish his new perspective on hunting and, ultimately, living a happy life. “He started out reluctant to be even hunting at all, and he found this reconnection,” says Carver. “The discovery of the Men of Letters and his connection to a line of family hunters that he could really relate to renewed his interest. He’s really been on this arc, of not just reconnecting with is past, but reconnecting with his brother.

Carver on Sam not looking for Dean:

“I think first and foremost, it’s not put to bed yet,” Carver tells us. “It’s something that will be dealt with in one form or another again. It left an emotional mark on our fans, and I think it’s left an emotional mark on our brothers as well. That’s, I think, the point of it. I think the idea was two brothers that are maturing and changing, and may not always act or be the way that we would hope them to be. We as people are not as people hope we’d be, and just because we’re not what others hope we are doesn’t mean it’s wrong.”
Carver tells us that while we haven’t heard the last conversation about Sam’s year of living like a civilian, there aren’t going to be any big twists or revelations as to why he made the choice he did. We’ve heard Sam’s reasons, and we’re going to have to accept them.
“What has been put to bed, in many ways, is Sam’s rationale for why he did what he did,” Carver confirms. “He’s stated his reasons, and that’s why he did it. That said, it’s still an open wound of sorts. We’ll see that dealt with in ways that we aren’t quite expecting.”

Question: Got any scoop on Supernatural? Dying to get some since we’re on hiatus until the 24th! —Ali
Ausiello: Given what a winning introduction the Men of Letters received earlier this year, surely that’s not the last we’ve seen or heard of the secret organization, right? Right… ish. “We will absolutely see the positive and negative effects of being legacies,” says EP Jeremy Carver, adding that MoL “are involved in some capacity” later this season. Hmm, could this bit of casting have anything to do with that?

MAY 15 SEASON FINALE
As the boys’ quest and the mytharc escalates, “There are a lot of intersecting plots and personal motivations that are going to come to a head,” teases Carver, adding that “several things will be changed forever.” Could one new mythology element introduced this season, the Men of Letters, be a part of the finale? After all, it seems Abaddon is back. Plus, Carver tells TVLine, “We will absolutely see the positive and negative effects of being legacies.” And yes, there will be “a few” cliffhangers, so prepare yourselves for a long summer.

Carver dishes that the end of the current season will see some resolution to this season’s major arc, which in recent weeks has found Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) completing series of complex trials in order to close the gates of Hell.
“Inevitably, this is all leading to a big conclusion with Crowley,” he says. “I think we’re going to see Crowley rising to a new level of ruthlessness we haven’t seen before in order to defend himself and his kingdom, as it were.”
He adds: “I think we’re going to see Crowley presented with a new twist on things that will effect him forever, as well.”
