Episode Description:

SAM AND DEAN MEET THEIR GRANDFATHER — Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are stunned when a man who claims to be Henry Winchester (guest star Gil McKinney), their grandfather, suddenly appears in their hotel room demanding to know where he can find John Winchester. Henry has time-traveled to stop a demon named Abbadon (guest star Alaina Huffman) and was looking for John’s help. Through Henry, Sam and Dean learn more about their father and the Winchester blood line.

Serge Ladouceur directed the episode written by Adam Glass.

As if the trust issues between the Winchesters, the return of Cas’ mysterious heavenly arc and Amelia’s presence weren’t enough, Dean and Sam will also deal with daddy complications when their paternal grandpa, Henry, time-travels to the present in a family mythology episode. “When you meet your father’s father, that brings up some of your father issues. In other words, what did your father’s father have to do with the way your father turned out?” previews executive producer Jeremy Carver. “A lot of that is explored head-on.”

A few days ago we got some big casting news about a character named Henry Winchester. I thought that was interesting considering the episode we’d just seen had so many nods to John. Was that intentional?
When we have things coming up, we always want to have seeds we’re planting. And also, we also make mentions of Mary — mom — in episodes coming up and part of that is the underlying reason for their quest is vengeance for what happened to their family. So any time we can keep family in the forefront of their minds — even if things aren’t really moving ahead on the actual quest — I think it keeps that kettle simmering at least. Even if its not in the most obvious way. So that’s one reason. The other reason is that John’s their dad, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t come across someone that dad knew.
And fans go crazy for that stuff.
Yeah! No, it’s fun. There’s something tremendous — when I say Winchester family tree, it’s not just the Winchesters, it’s the whole tree of supporting characters. So it’s a wonderful, wonderful vast…Pinterest board of people and events to pick from!

I was on set for Episode 12, which involves the Winchesters’ paternal grandfather, Henry [Gil McKinney]. What can you reveal about that story, in broad strokes?
I think one of the real fun parts of the show is the way, over the years, we’ve built in these holes in the family tree. I think we’re giving the same treatment to this character of Henry and what the boys discover … Again, I think it answers a lot of questions, if there were more questions that needed to be answered in terms of the overall family. [It] answers in another way why these families may have been fated to be together, the Campbells and the Winchesters. It also speaks to one of the brothers in particular in terms of finding his place in the family mythology. It resonates across several levels for the characters, the show and then the ongoing mythology.

The past couple of episodes, “Hunteri Heroici” especially, featured a few nice nods to John [Jeffrey Dean Morgan]. Will that continue?
I think what’s important is — to speak not just to John but to speak to Mary also — part of what drives the questions in terms of closing the gates of Hell is what effect demons have had on their family …It’s very important to us to keep that pot boiling in terms of the desire to right the past wrongs.

‘SUPERNATURAL’: JEREMY CARVER EXPLAINS CASTING NEW WINCHESTER
The Winchester family tree continues to expand with news that this season will introduce Henry Winchester, Sam and Dean’s paternal grandfather, who will time travel his way into the present day in episode 12 of this season.
And as executive producer Jeremy Carver reveals, the episode, which will air in the new year, will be a loaded bag for Sam and Dean. “The episode really allows them not just to delve into a piece of family lore that they really will carry with them moving forward in this season and seasons beyond, it also, frankly, forces them to deal again with some issues related to their grandfather and their father, John,” he says. “For me, that’s one of the most fun things about the show — all of these little patches of history and mythology that we can fill in.”
But will the episode, which Carver describes as “fun [and] heartfelt,” be the only time we see Henry, who will be played by ER vet Gil Mckinney? Or will he be a looming presence, much like Sam and Dean’s other grandfather Samuel Campbell, who we first met in season 4 and had a large arc in season 6? “That’s not to be disclosed,” says Carver.

Question: Any new scoop on Supernatural? —Jonathan
Ausiello: A big “Winchester family mythology episode” is on the docket for late January, confirms exec producer Jeremy Carver. Playing a central role in the hour will be Sam and Dean’s paternal grandfather Henry, whose arrival stirs up some daddy issues for the pair. “In other words, what did their father’s father have to do with the way their father turned out? A lot of that is explored head-on,” reveals Carver. “There’s a tremendous amount of emotional ground that’s covered. When we get a chance to do one of these episodes, we try to do it with great care because we’re essentially [etching] a part of the mythology into stone.” Might Jeffrey Dean Morgan make a cameo as Sam and Dean’s late pa? Responds Carver, evasively: “As with any character, we always have open discussions about everybody in our universe.” (We’ll take that as a no.)

‘Supernatural’: Gil McKinney Cast In Important Season 8 Role

“Supernatural” has some big things planned for the second half of Season 8, but you won’t want to miss Episode 12, titled “As Time Goes By,” when Gil McKinney, an “ER” and “Friday Night Lights” alum, guest stars in a very important role.

The episode deals with time travel and involves a man called Henry being transported to the present day; but this isn’t a simple “monster of the week” case for the Winchesters. The Huffington Post was on set for the filming of the episode, and we can exclusively reveal that the time-traveller is none other than Henry Winchester (McKinney), Sam and Dean’s paternal grandfather. McKinney certainly has the bone structure to fit in well with the Winchester clan.

“This is a [man] we knew nothing about, because he was never involved in our lives or the lives of people that were involved directly with us,” Jensen Ackles told us on set. “It’s kind of getting some insight into the life and the legacy of the Winchesters, which is something that we as characters never really knew.”

Jared Padalecki agreed, adding, “And we found out about the Campbells. We knew their mom, kind of knew her business, and so it’s interesting to see from a Winchester perspective what happened, and learn a little bit more about our father.”

The episode is scheduled to air in late January.

– A character called Henry will appear. He is a junior member of an anti-demonic cult in the 1950’s. He manages to open a portal that takes him to 2013.
– Another character called “Josie Sands”. She is the host of a Demon called Abbadon as she follows Henry through to 2013 to claim a vital artifact.

Some of the best “Supernatural” episodes have explored time travel — and this season, they’re taking a new angle on the classic genre. This time, though, it’s not Sam and Dean doing the decade-hop.

In episode 812, titled “As Time Goes By,” we’ll see a cult forming in 1958. The anti-demonic group has good intentions, as does Henry, a rookie member who joins the cult with the intention of protecting his 7-year-old son.

Described as “Robert Downey Jr. meets Cary Grant,” Henry is dapper, smart, and considerably cocky… until he rips open a time portal and finds himself hurtled into 2013, where he’s a little off his game. He doesn’t time-travel alone, though. He’s followed through the portal by 28-year-old Josie Sands, a sexy, strong Katharine Hepburn type… with a secret.

Needless to say, when Sam and Dean happen upon the time travelers in their hunt for a bloodthirsty demon, shenanigans ensue. Not to mention — Henry’s son would be 62 at this point, and we’d certainly expect him to factor in somehow.
