Episode Description:

CARTOONS AREN’T ALWAYS FUNNY — Castiel (Misha Collins) tells Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) that he’s decided to become a hunter like them. Sam and Dean aren’t sold on the idea but agree to investigate a case Cas found where a man’s heart literally burst through his chest. The guys discover there has been more than one odd murder in the small town and all of them resemble cartoon deaths.

Paul Edwards directed the episode written by Andrew Dabb.

This episode features a guest appearance by Mike Farrell from M.A.S.H. who plays an old Winchester family friend who the trio also try to save. During a visit to the Supernatural set in September, we watched Mike, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins film a scene for this episode that involves Castiel and Sam jumping into the head of Mike’s character in order to try help him in a cartoon-type world. This is very different from previous Supernatural episodes, but the concept and execution look great! We’ll have more details for you as the episode approaches.

Question: I gotta say, this new version of Dean Winchester on Supernatural leaves me downright tingly all over! Any chance you might have some news about what’s on the horizon for our deliciously messed up Purgatory escapee? —Gina
Ausiello: You thought he was getting deeper, Gina, but your favorite Winchester brother is actually going to become two-dimensional in the show’s upcoming cartoon-inspired episode. Supe fans already know that the outing will find ‘toon elements enmeshed with the real world; I can add that all of the deaths in the ep are cartoon tropes – such as anvils falling from the sky and people plummeting off ledges after hovering in mid-air for a few seconds. I also hear that Sam, Dean and Castiel will step inside an actual cartoon (think Bob Hoskins in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?). Finally, all of the Saturday-morning-style fun will take place in the season’s eighth episode. As Porky Pig said, that’s all folks!

During a visit to the Supernatural set* in September, Misha Collins dropped a big spoiler: Castiel is getting out of Purgatory. That’s right, folks, whatever the reason our favorite angel was trapped in that dimension, he’s making his way back to earth. Misha didn’t share the actual process of how Castiel gets out, but that’s just details, isn’t it?

As Castiel gets back into the groove, we’ll see something that isn’t always typical for Supernatural: Castiel spending some time with Sam. Now that Cas is out of Purgatory, Misha (when asked if Cas might have any interaction with Sam if he doesn’t feel very charitable towards Benny) said that the show has just begun “playing out any dynamic between Sam and Cas” but then went on to jokingly bemoan that he hoped this would stop because “that means I’m working with Jared more.” As for Sam’s feelings on a closer relationship with Castiel, star Jared Padalecki joked that “Sam’s always thought Cas looks weird. Weird hair. His nose is kinda funny, the jacket….”

But seriously, Sam will be happy when Castiel gets out, despite their uneven history: “I think when Sam was actively hunting, I think he and Cas never saw eye-to-eye and Cas understandably had some resentment for Sam. I mean, Sam did canoodle with the very thing that Castiel hates the most…with demons. So Cas, being the noble type that he is, always held that against Sam. And Sam is a smart guy, he gets that. I feel like now, Sam…Sam’s had a tendency to try and take the higher road, [which] sometimes put himself in a bad situation like ‘good intentions pave the road to hell’, but now he’s just happy to see Cas.”

Tyler: I’ll take anything you’ve got on Supernatural!
Prepare for Supernatural…as a cartoon show. Kind of. “What happens when you find yourself living in a cartoon universe? That’s a lot of fun,” showrunner Jeremy Carver says of an upcoming episode, but notes that it will not be animated. “It deals with cartoon physiques in the real world,” he explains. Another fun one to look forward to is “an episode that deals pretty heavily and fun-ly with the LARPing universe, different from the way we’ve dealt with it in the past.”

Episodes 7 and 8 will reveal much much more on that front as well as enlighten the audience about Cas’ arc for the season that involves a big threat, says Collins. “There’s something going on with Cas that neither Cas nor the brothers know. Cas is sort of being manipulated behind the scenes and he’s not aware of that and neither are the boys,” he says. “We’ll see how that affects their relationship in the long run.”
Meanwhile, when will we learn Cas’s thoughts on Dean’s new vampire buddy Benny? Soon. And let’s just say they all won’t likely be sharing beers any time soon. “He’s wary of Benny from the get-go, and I think that he then is possibly a bit jealous too of the friendship or camaraderie that happens between Dean and Benny,” he says. “You know, Cas doesn’t have a lot of other friends in Purgatory.” Someone get this angel a hug!

M*A*S*H‘ vet Mike Farrell will guest star in Episode 8 as Fred Jones, “an aging mentalist with a slippery grasp on reality,” explains Carver.
