Buffy’s Charisma Carpenter: Working on Supernatural Was Super Tasty

Charisma Carpenter fell under the Supernatural casting department’s spell when they asked her to play a witch, but the real magic happened once she found out who would play her on-screen husband.

“I got a call from my manager saying that there was interest from Supernatural inviting me to do an episode,” Carpenter tells TVGuide.com. “I thought that was a great idea and went forward with it. And then I found out after that James [Marsters] was going to be part of it too, and then it just got super tasty.”

The former Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel co-stars reunite on Friday’s episode, “Shut Up, Dr. Phil” (9/8c, The CW), in which Carpenter plays a witch named Maggie Stark. “I hadn’t played in that genre in a while, so I thought it would be a good time,” says Carpenter. “She’s a very powerful witch but disgruntled. She’s also involved in some sort of artistic and philanthropic work. That’s her passion outside of her marriage.”

When the town of Prosperity, Ind., is hit with a string of grisly deaths, the Winchester brothers put on their best G-Men personas to investigate. They track down Maggie’s husband Donald (Marsters), who claims that she’s taking her anger out on the townspeople for a mistake he made. “I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say, but he’s a force to be reckoned with,” says Carpenter. “We’ve been married a super-duper long time and with that comes some problems and comedy.”

Although Carpenter and Marsters have a shared TV past, working on Supernatural was the most time the two had actually spent together in the same scenes. “James and I were sort of in it together, you know?” says Carpenter. “This wasn’t our show. We were sort of guests there and so it was a lot of fun to be in it together, trying to learn Romanian in lickety-split time and trying to make our fans happy.”

Speaking Romanian — which Carpenter says is a bit of a spoiler about the couple’s back story — proved to be easier for Marsters, who had put on a British accent for his Buffy vampire character Spike. “He has quite the gift and ear for music and for language,” she says. “He did a fantastic job, and every now and then I’d look at the translator and hope that I was fulfilling the pronunciation properly. Judging from the expressions on the translators’ faces, it was really kind of funny, but I was definitely alienating Romanians left and right. I don’t think many viewers who watch speak the language, so I’m kind of counting on that.”

Luckily, Carpenter had the help and support of series stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, whom she can’t seem to praise enough. “They were willing to hold up our cue cards for us when we had to do our Romanian,” she says. “They were so cooperative and so helpful. You always hope people you work with will be nice, but they were just over the top. And I really enjoyed seeing them interact. They have great chemistry together and they were individually in their own right very talented. In this episode, Jensen had a lot of humor. He has that psychobabble speech that he delivered that was really funny.”

In a way, she feels that there’s a certain kinship between Supernatural and the Buffy/Joss Whedon-verse. “There are similarities: They have that very unique brand of humor and supernatural, drama and special effects. I think that there is a given understanding or appreciation for one another because of it.”

Supernatural airs Fridays at 9/8c on The CW.

Examiner.com has up an interview with the actress Charisma Carpenter.

Charisma Carpenter gets & gives ‘Supernatural’ relationship advice

It’s from one iconic, fan favorite series to another for Charisma Carpenter! The Buffy alum spent some time up in Vancouver this summer filming a very special guest starring role on Supernatural, and from what she told us about her “Shut Up, Dr. Phil” appearance (with a title like that, you know it’s going to be good!), the episode itself is sure to be iconic all on its own.

Last we saw the Winchester Brothers, Dean (Jensen Ackles) was just put on trial for his sins, and though he is out of the defendant’s hot seat, his heart is still heavy about a lot of things. Dean was always the hunter who was quick to gank first and ask questions later– or maybe even not at all. We saw that most recently just two episodes ago with Sam (Jared Padalecki)’s childhood crush who turned out to be a monster of her own. Yet here he takes the “Dr. Phil” approach with Carpenter’s Maggie Stark, a witch scorned who is unleashing her wrath on an entire town when she learns her husband (guest star James Marsters) has strayed outside the marriage.

“Maggie– she’s a little bit of a jealous girl and has to manage her temper a little bit, and that’s tough to do when you’re a powerful woman with a lot of witchy behaviors and spells to be cast and stuff. If you get her in a bad mood– she’s just the wrong person to make mad! Cordelia would make you suffer, but [Maggie] will make you suffer and die,” Carpenter laughed, referencing the Buffy role that made her famous and which has shades in her new Supernatural role.

Supernatural | Is one half of our favorite freak-fighting duo about to go down a very dark path? We got a sneak peek at this Friday’s episode, and the elder Winchester is hitting the bottle big time to bury his guilt over killing Amy. Yep, while watching “Shut Up, Dr. Phil” (which of course hosts a mini-Buffy reunion), we couldn’t help but notice there’s rarely a scene where Dean doesn’t have a bottle of alcohol in hand. Sam takes notice, too, and urges Dean to open up about what’s bugging him, but it doesn’t seem like Dean’s boozy problem is going anywhere anytime soon. Bonus: Remember Season 1?s “Bugs”? Dean’s least favorite flying creatures are about to make a beeline — pun intended — for him again.

From Toronto Convention:

Jensen: Dean is trusting of Sam. I think that he also understands that Sam is dealing with a very unique situation, so he keeps an eye out, but I think that Dean does think that Sam’s heart is in the right place even though his head is messed up. And this will affect their relationship for a couple episodes, but it will be resolved, and I think Sam understands that it (the last episode’s shocker) was a necessity as opposed to a stab in the back. Dean doesn’t tell Sam right away – he lives with it for a couple episodes.

First Look: Buffy vets Charisma Carpenter, James Marsters Guest Star on Supernatural

It’s a reunion so epic there must be Supernatural forces at work! Ex-Buffy costars James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter team up on the October 21 episode of The CW shocker to wreak havoc on the Winchester boys as a pair of marrieds with issues far more wicked than anything their former characters Spike and Cordelia ever encountered.

“Charisma plays a very powerful witch,” says executive producer Sera Gamble. “In the episode, she starts throwing her power around because she and her husband are in the middle of a contentious divorce.” Where’s a good vampire slayer when you need one?

The Buffy Reunion: Gamble revealed that casting Buffy and Angel alums Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters in an upcoming episode came from “really hard work on the part of our casting directors and Bob and I were on the phone quite a bit.” Added Singer, “And the network was helpful… and fairly insistent!”

Gamble recalled how the couple Carpenter and Marsters play, “seemed like a good opportunity to cast a couple and the first idea floated by the network was, ‘Is there a real couple we could cast?’ And then our very creative and savvy casting directors came back with this genre-specific idea that I think is great, because I think it speaks really directly to our fanbase in this way. Our casting directors really understand the people that watch this show.”

3. Thou shalt take any opportunity to use guest stars from the Whedonverse. Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-stars James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter will play a bewitching couple in the fifth episode. “That was not a coincidence, that was really hard work on the part of our casting directors,” said Gamble. “This couple seemed like a good opportunity to cast a couple. The first idea floated [out] by the network was, ‘Is there a real couple we could cast?’ Our very creative and savvy casting directors came back with this genre-specific idea that I think is great. I think it speaks very directly to our fan base. In this way, our casting directors really understand the people who watch the show.”

Set Spoilers:

I went along with my roomies to the SPN location set again today (was there yesterday and earlier today as well) to check out the exterior shootings and both boys were there as well as Charisma Carpenter. It was pretty much about Charisma driving a nice porche and the boys in the Impala. Then at the very end the boys went to the executive producer and said they had to do something for the fans. So they got together all of them around the Impala and thanked the fans that was there. It was really amazing moment and some guy yelled out that we were being filmed as well. And the boys were being so sweet and waved at us again later and yeah.
They told us later that that had never happened before so now we feel special!!!
I love them all!!

The TV Addict: Suffice it to say, there’s a very good reason why Ask the Addict has been somewhat devoid of SUPERNATURAL scoop. That reason, the fine folks at Warner Bros. Television tend to keep an extra tight lid on story lines emanating from that SUPERNATURAL writer’s room. Luckily for you, we did a little extra snooping this week in an effort to dig up some scoop that goes a little something like so: White it probably won’t come as much as a surprise that those clever SUPERNATURAL writers continue to tap into the cultural zeitgeist du jour, what just might is the subject of their jabs. Which is to say, early episodes of SUPERNATURAL’s seventh season will not only poke fun at Newsweek’s recent controversial cover gal, but the fifth episode of the season will be entitled “Shut Up, Dr. Phil.”

Here’s one little vittle that didn’t quite make it into my genre-gasmic exclusive about Buffy/Angel alums James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter guesting on the fifth episode of the CW series’ seventh season: The names of the husband and witchy wife they’re playing are Don and Maggie Stark. And that, now, is all I got!

Exclusive: Supernatural Stages Buffy Reunion With Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters!

The CW’s Supernatural aims to slay you by reuniting Buffyverse alumni Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters — aka Cordelia and Spike — in one of its Season 7 episodes, TVLine has learned exclusively.

What’s more, the two actors, who previously worked together both on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its David Boreanaz-fronted spin-off Angel, will be playing husband and wife on the spooktacular drama, which launches its new cycle on Friday, Sept. 23, at 9/8c. Watch for this glorious genre-gasm to come in the new season’s fifth episode, titled “Shut Up, Dr. Phil.”

“This episode is ‘Bewitched gone wrong,’” reveals showrunner Sera Gamble. “[It was] all upside for this successful man (Marsters) while he was married to the witch (Carpenter), but now that he’s pissed her off, the whole town is paying the price.”

Carpenter and Marsters will film their Supernatural appearance the week of August 22.
