Supernatural Family Values
New showrunner Sera Gamble talks about the next step for Sam & Dean, as they’re joined by Grampa for Season 6.

Supernatural is about to enter Season 6 – something that was once seen a long shot, as the network was sometimes slow to renew the series, while series creator Eric Kripke spoke about the five-year plan he had for Sam and Dean Winchester. But this past year, The CW renewed Supernatural relatively early, ensuring that we will see what happens to the Winchesters in the wake of their battle with the devil.

With Kripke stepping down as showrunner, Sera Gamble was a natural to take on that role this year. Having been with the series since it began, Gamble had already been made an executive producer on the series, writing many notable episodes along the way.

I recently sat down with Gamble to talk about what’s next for Supernatural, in a season that will somehow see the return of Samuel Campbell (Mitch Pileggi, who will appear on a recurring basis), the grandfather Dean met when he time traveled back to the 1970s in Season 4.

IGN TV: Fans are so passionate about this show. Is it funny to know that for years they were saying, “Please let it be renewed, please let it be renewed,” and then hear wariness from some when it is renewed this time, just because they love it so much and are afraid of it going on longer than it should?

Gamble: ‘You know who might f**k up the show? The writers! You know who might f**k up Sam and Dean is the writers!’ [laughs]

No, we love the fans. That’s the thing about writing on a genre show. I’m a genre fan. I will boldly admit to being a life-long Trekkie. I was born and bred on the cheesy rock [set] and William Shatner. So I am well aware of what it is to be part of a fandom. And fandom is defined by meticulous care and really giving a s**t and having strong opinions and arguing. It’s a community with opinions. If they were in a room they’d be fist-fighting some of the time. You know, the Sam-girls and the Dean-girls would be like pulling each other’s hair, some of them! That goes with the territory, and it’s also immensely rewarding because they’re giving a s**t and they’re paying attention.

IGN: If you hadn’t gotten renewed, would that Season 5 finale been the same finale we saw, minus Sam showing up at the end?

Gamble: I mean it’s a good question for Eric [Kripke], and I heard what he said at Comic-Con, which is that more of the deaths would have permanent. He pitched to me a finale of the show very early in the run of the series that had a lot of similarities. We have a lot of ideas for series finales, and now we get another opportunity to do one. And stuff that didn’t get in that one will get in the next one. Classy problems!

IGN: What’s it like for you taking on the showrunner duties this season? Has it been a very different experience?

Gamble: Well, it’s a bit more responsibility, but I think I’m very spoiled. I have Eric on the creative team; he’s still very much an active member of the show. He was completely involved in the creative conception of the season. He’s actively involved in the breaks of the episodes. He just bows out when we start talking about casting and budgets. He’s like, “Aaaand I’m gone. I’m gonna go home and change some diapers. I’ll see you all in a couple days.” Then Bob Singer, of course, has been co-showrunner of the show since the beginning, and he is one of the best and most seasoned showrunners in the business. He is absolutely a huge part of the reason that Supernatural not only is still on the air but looks anywhere near the way it looks and sounds anywhere near the way it sounds, on the budget we have and the time we have. He’s right there with me. So if every new showrunner had what I have starting out, there probably would be a much lower suicide rate in Hollywood. [Laughs]

IGN: Sam and Dean obviously have had their issues, to say the least, but they’ve also reconciled quite a bit. Where would you say they are at now this season, after all they’ve gone through?

Gamble: Well, look, there’s always going to be new issues. We consciously skipped ahead a year at the beginning of this season, and one of the reasons that we did that is because Sam and Dean have been nose-to-nose for quite awhile. They really had to come to a place of understanding, and you can’t leave them there forever. But also, Sam was gone and Dean did his best to move on. When we pick up the series, he has been out of the business for a year. He’s been living with a woman and her child. He’s been doing his best to basically live a civilian life. And this is like completely psychotic and weird in the Supernatural world. He’s tried to grieve Sam normally, as much as he can - minimize the amount of trying for demon deals and Hoodoo spells and just let him go and move on. Coming back to a Dean like that is a different Dean [than we're used to]. So when you put Sam and Dean back together, it’s kind of about what ingredients have changed. Then you put them in new circumstances and of course all new problems arise, and we’ve been writing about those.

IGN: What can you say about Mitch Pileggi coming back into the show, in what sounds to be a much bigger way?

Gamble: I can say we’re excited about it, and he’s knocking it out of the park. He’s just — again to genre fans — he’s a really big deal. He’s a terrific actor. He is part of a story line about the Campbells, Sam and Dean’s mother’s side of the family, who are actually a long line of hunters; that’s fairly rare in the hunting community, where generally speaking you become a hunter because you see your mom get burned on ceiling or you see your sister’s face get ripped off by vampires or something. So hunters are generally loners and maladjusted and seat-of-their-pants and they learn how to do stuff out of necessity. These are better adjusted, better organized, kind of more stable… It’s a different picture of hunters and their family. We were interested in exploring that.

IGN: You guys do such a great job of taking characters that we’ve only seen maybe once or twice and bringing them back with a lot of importance. Is there anyone you have in mind that you’d like to bring into the mix this season?

Gamble: Crowley [played by Mark Sheppard]. He comes back in a pretty big way. He’s one of our favorite villains in the history of the show. The way I like to describe Crowley is that he’s punished for his success in a certain way. You know, he was on the run during the apocalypse within a post-apocalyptic hell. If you do good, then you get promoted. So he’s doing well for himself, but the last thing he wants is more responsibility.

IGN: I have to ask… was Chuck actually God?

Gamble: I have to say… what do you think?

IGN: That was my first thought [when he disappeared]. That’s where I was leaning, when I watched the season finale. So, will we see Chuck again, or is that the last of him?

Gamble: We have no current plans to see him again. I never say never. There might be a reason to bring him back at some point, but I can’t definitively say one thing or the other because we are so enjoying people debating it. [Laughs]

IGN: I am so curious the Supernatural anime [Supernatural: The Animation]…

Gamble: I don’t know much about it. I just know that’s awesome, right?

IGN: It’s amazing that it exists!

Gamble: One day I went into Eric’s office and there were these weird animation drawings, and I was like, “Is that Sam and Dean?” He’s like, “They’re doing an anime.” And do you want to hear the best part? They don’t want us involved. They’re doing all the work! We get to just watch it like viewers and enjoy Sam and Dean in a whole new way. And we were just like, “That is so cool!” We’ll just get beer and invite everybody over. It’s just so weird to get to watch the show without having to break the stories. And like we said at Comic-Con, we’re hoping for a lot of tentacles.

IGN: [Laughs]. That was my thought too, when I heard there would be episodes that were completely original. “Well, there’s got to be a tentacle monster.”

Gamble: Oh, the tentacles are coming out!

IGN: Almost every time we interview Jeffrey Dean Morgan, we ask him, “Is John Winchester coming back to Supernatural?” And he always says the same thing, which is he loves the show and he’d love to come back and that maybe if they’re wrapping things up, they could bring him back. Do you think that’s ever in the cards?

Gamble: I mean, that’s good to know! We don’t know yet. Hopefully we’re not wrapping things up yet. We love him as much as you do. He’s a movie star! Every time I see Jeffrey Dean Morgan, he’s on a giant poster that I can see from the freeway, and I’m like, “That’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan! Oh my God!” We’re just happy for his success.

Although, every time we have a story we’re like, “You know who’d be perfect for this? Really, the person should be Dad.” And it has come up fairly often, and we’ve been like, “Is he avai–” “Noooo… He’s not available. He’s shooting– have you heard of Watchmen?” “Oh, that little thing… Whatever.” So, you know, he’s a movie star, but we hope so.

Supernatural: Season 6 premieres Friday, September 24th on The CW.

I grew up in a college town in the Midwest US and both of my parents and an older sibling were involved with a local community theater.  So that’s where I caught the “bug” of wanting to be an actor.  I starred in a production of Brighton Beach Memoirs and fell in love with acting.  I went on to study theater at college and immediately came out to Los Angeles to pursue the career.  After about 3 years of waiting tables and auditioning, it all started to pay off, and I began working full time as an actor.

 How did you first hear about Supernatural? How did you end up auditioning for this show?

I read the script and loved the role.  I had not seen the show at the time.  I read for the producers and got the part, and then I had to go back and watch past episodes so I knew what all the references Chuck was making were about!  I loved what I saw.  The writing was really strong and Jered and Jensen were addictive.  I was hooked.

What do you like about this character?

I love that he is the least likely hero.  He considers himself a failure, and here he is, a prophet.  I love that idea of him not even knowing the power that he has-and most of the time, not even wanting it.  The idea that you are given a gift and how you perceive that gift could change the path you are on, is fascinating to me.

What is your best and worst memory from shooting Supernatural? What was your favorite scene to shoot?

In the episode where I tell them to “hoard toilet paper” we were on top of this mountain in Vancouver where it was freezing cold and there were these wicked bugs flying everywhere.  They flocked to the lights in a swarm.  It was wild, and not the most comfortable.  We were all huddled together all night.  I’d say my favorite scene to shoot was probably the Convention episode where I actually got to be the hero for a split second, when I yell “salt the door!” and Becky falls in love-as a character actor, I rarely get those moments so that was cool.  In the script it even said that Chuck gets the “hero angle”, so I was like, sweet.

Do you know yet if you will appear again later during this (possibly final) season?

I don’t know.  After last season’s ending, there was a feeling that Chuck would not be back, because after he disappears, in Godly fashion….it’s complicated to write him back in.  And this season is going in a different direction.   So they are still trying to figure it out.  That being said, with a show like Supernatural, you never know….!

Have you been a victim of Jared and Jensen’s pranks on set? If so, how did they get you and what about payback? Any funny stories that happened with you on the set, maybe funny bloopers ? 

The most awkward moment like that was one time I’d left something in Jensen’s trailer and he wasn’t around, just this big bodyguard guy who watches his trailer.  And I meekly went up to him and said, “I need to grab something from J’s trailer” and the guy kind of chuckled and said, “go on in”.  So I open the door and Jensen’s dog’s are in there and they go in attack mode barking like crazy.   I was so freaked, I tripped and fell backwards down the stairs of the trailer.  The bodyguard laughed.  Me, not so much.

Could you share with us your impressions about Jensen and Jared? Jensen once said in an interview that he’s better in comedies. It seems Jared thinks otherwise about himself. If you had an opportunity to work in one project with Jared or Jensen, who do you prefer for a comedy? And for a drama?

It’s hard to say.  I’ve only seen them do this, and they are both great at this.  BUT, just hanging out with them, they both have great senses of humor so I could see them doing comedies as well.  I’d love to do a comedy with either of them.  I would be a great sidekick.  Just me standing next to Jered, who is like 6′4″ (I’m 5′7″) is comedy.

Are there any other people on the team of Supernatural, who are special to you and whose work you value, even if the fans of the show might be unaware of their contribution? If yes, please tell us about them, we’d love to know more about the behind-the-scenes. Would you like to collaborate with the Supernatural cast in another project?

I’ve really grown fond of Misha. From the beginning, he and I hung out a lot. We share an agent and have a lot in common. He’s a terrifically unique human being. I have also become good friends with Julie McNiven. We actually met doing conventions together and really hit it off. She’s also very cool. I’d love to work with either of them in another capacity.

When you finished reading the first series scenario where you are on the cast did you come up with an idea like “Man! I will play the part of Eric Kripke!”?

It took me a few episodes to realize I was Kripke.  At the outset, it seemed like I was a combination of all of the writers.  But as it went on, it became clear to me that I was most specifically him, AND that I was the character through which he could address the fans.

Everybody wonders if Chuck is the God or not. What is your idea about this?

I strongly feel that it should be up to the fans to interpret it as they see fit.  When I first read it, I didn’t think that at first.  But then after we shot it, and the way we shot it, it felt like that was the way to go.  I think if you follow the idea that I am Kripke, and Kripke is the Creator of the show Supernatural, well, then, it should follow that Chuck is God.

Do you prefer to play keeping strictly to the scenario or are you one of those actors who is always eager to contribute to the character image? What part of Chuck is yours?

I always like to throw my bit in there, improvise when I can, add manerisms that are mine.  There’s a lot of me in Chuck-the nervous energy, the self doubt-those are characteristics that I can easily tap into.  And I always wanted to play Chuck very rough around the edges - there were things in the script I really grabbed onto, like the fact that he drinks quite a bit.  And that when we first meet him, he probably hasn’t seen sunlight in a long time.  He is a hermit.  I really wanted to make that part of him clear and not shy away from it.

What about other sets you appeared? What good or bad memories do you keep from these experiences? Is there the same friendly atmosphere as on Supernatural set?

I’ve been on many different sets and I have to say, it is rare to work on one where the atmosphere is jovial and everyone has a love for what they are doing.  Felicity was that way, so was Alias.  And I have to say so is Supernatural.  I had a lot of fun working with that crew and those actors.

Please tell us about your previous work projects and about your future plans. 

I’ve been working in television for about 15 years.  I suppose some of my most notable credits are Felicity, Birds of Prey, Alias, a shortlived Sci Fi show called Threshold and most recently a comedy called Head Case.   The movies I’m most recognized for are Waiting with Ryan Reynolds, State of Play, Kicking and Screaming and Not Another Teen Movie.   I have a movie with Jenna Fisher coming out in the Fall called “A Little Help”.  Hopefully you’ll be able to get that in Russia!

Which points of your career are the most significant to you as an actor? Which movie roles are the most special to you as a person?

I find something in every work experience that I benefit from.   Some of course have more than others, but I always try to take something special away.

Any particular role that would you like to play?

I’d like to play a bad guy soon.  Show my dark side!

 Have you yourself ever tried writing books?

I have as a matter of fact.  I’m always writing-songs, screenplays, short stories.  Chuck’s right, it’s hard!  But so fun.

 Do you find it hard to combine the shooting process with your musical band activity?

It makes life busy, but it always works out.  The hardest part is when the band has a show that we have to cancel because of an acting job.  But it always comes around to benefit the band and we make it work.  We’re delighted for instance, to have a new legion of fans from the Supernatural world!

If you hadn’t got into acting, what would you do for a living? What else do you like to do except acting? Any hobbies?

Well, obviously, music.  I can see myself having been something involved with music-composing, teaching.  I have always romanticized the idea of teaching music or drama at a University level.

What is your life motto or may be favorite quote or phrase?

I’ve got this quote on my desk from Samuel Beckett, “Ever Tried? Ever Failed? No matter.  Try Again.  Fail Again.  Fail better”.  It depresses me and motivates me at the same time.  In the acting world you’re life is constant trying out and facing rejecting but keeping on….this gives me the strength.

What are your favorite books, movies, directors, bands or musicians? 

So many, so much.  I love the novelist Michael Chabon, he’s probably one of my favorites.  Movie directors I love are Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Christopher Nolan.  Bands-Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Wilco…and there are so many new bands I’m constantly listening to.  There’s a band from Australia called Tame Impala I’m currently obsessed with.

Are you familiar with the Russian cinema? Have you seen any Russian movies? If yes, do you like any Russian actors or directors?

I’m probably not as familiar as I’d like to be.  I know Tarkovsky is one of the best, I’m familiar with him.  Anton Yelchin is a young actor making waves here.  He’s a very talented young actor.

What would you like to tell the visitors of our website, yours and Supernatural fans in Russia? We greatly appreciate your work and would be happy to welcome you to Russia one day.

I’d love to come to Russia some day!  If you have a convention, I’m there.  I could even bring my band.  I’ve never been-and I hear wonderful things.  Lots of love!

Supernatural’s Misha Collins Wants to Catch People Off-Guard With Random Acts of KindnessSupernatural’s Misha Collins, who plays an angel who doesn’t help people, hopes to use his stardom and Supernatural fandom to lead people to reach out to others in any way they can — through his Random Acts charity. “If it’s something unusual and something people aren’t expecting, then it has a greater chance of having a lasting impact,” the 36-year-old actor tells TVGuide.com. Among his projects: raising money to help build three orphanages in Haiti as well as raising funds for the victims of the flood in Pakistan. His effort also includes simply buying flowers for someone for no reason other than trying to make their life better. Collins explains why Twitter led to his new endeavor, how his small beginnings made him motivated, and why he finds himself in a powerful, yet bizarre, position.

TVGuide.com: How did Random Acts get started?
Misha Collins: I started a Twitter account and I thought I was going to answer a few questions over the course of an afternoon. It evolved into me continuously updating it for now over a year. In the process of doing it I came across this whole bizarre Supernatural fandom and I noticed there were a lot of people spending an unbelievable amount of time and energy and resources on some very strange things. It dawned on me that it could be a worthwhile endeavor to try to harness those creative resources and put them to a perhaps more benevolent use. That’s the nutshell genesis of Random Acts.

TVGuide.com: What’s your mission?
Collins: The mission is to take people off-guard with random acts of kindness so to shock people into noticing. If it’s something unusual and something people aren’t expecting then it has a greater chance of having a lasting impact on people’s psyche and future behavior.

TVGuide.com: Was this always a passion of yours?
Collins: Yes, it has always been something that I’ve cared about. I’ve been reflecting on that a little bit lately. I think it has to do with what I was the recipient of as a young person. I grew up with a family that had very little and were at times homeless. There are incidences in my childhood that stand out when people were really shockingly kind to us and took time and money out of their days and wallet and made a real difference for us. There was a woman that I didn’t even know that gave my mother $100 when I was 6 so she could buy us Christmas presents. If I remember that still, something was meaningful there.

TVGuide.com: And you’re running as far as you can in 24 hours to raise money?
Collins: I’ve run a couple marathons so that’s the minimal I’m hoping to achieve. I’m going to try to run farther and we’ll see how far I make it. The impetus to keep going is there when every kilometer brings in a few hundred extra dollars but at some point I’m sure my will will give out.

TVGuide.com: Have you found having a big fan base empowers you to be more active?
Collins: I think there are these people out there that are excited and creative and looking for something to do and I actually — weirdly to me — have the capacity to galvanize that. It sort of feels like the kind of thing you should do if you have the opportunity to. I tread lightly because I don’t want to be one of those soap box celebs who, because they happen to be in the limelight, thinks that people should listen to their particular political rant — I don’t want to be that person. I’m trying to tread lightly, but also take advantage of my position at the same time.

First Look: Mitch Pileggi Meets the Winchesters On ‘Supernatural’

Really, seriously, my new TV column debuts Wednesday, Sept. 1. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it — I’m not going to post again until then. Probably.

But once again a tasty TV morsel arrived in my email inbox and I just had to share it with my fellow ‘Supernatural’ addicts. It’s the first photo from Season 6 of the show, which returns Fri., Sept. 24, 9PM ET on the CW. (Don’t forget that the show moves to Fridays. Get those season passes in order.)

Behold Mitch Pileggi — a.k.a. Grandpa Samuel — with both Dean and Sam Winchester (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki). Of course Dean met Samuel in a Season 4 episode, ‘In the Beginning,’ but both Winchesters will get to know their grandfather much better this season.

Pileggi, a reliably excellent character actor who has appeared on everything from ‘The X-Files’ to ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ will have a recurring role in Season 6 as a patriarch of the Campbell side of the family, which has been hunting weird and wild critters since the Mayflower landed. Corin Nemec and Jessica Heafey play other members of the Campbell clan in Season 6.

The thrilling and terrifying journey of the Winchester Brothers continues with the sixth season of “Supernatural” on The CW.

Twenty-six years ago, Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. Subsequently, their father John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, “Watchmen”) raised them to be soldiers. He taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America…and he taught them how to kill it.
