TV Guide has a new interview with Sera Gamble where she talks a bit more about the episode 7.17.
Supernatural Boss: It’s “Weird” to See Castiel Back
Could Castiel have survived Leviathans’ mass exodus of his body, leaving only a soggy trenchcoat behind? On Friday’s episode of Supernatural (9/8c, The CW), Castiel has returned… but if he’s intact remains to be seen.
“He plays a substantial role in the episode,” series executive producer Sera Gamble tells TVGuide.com, “but when he comes back, it’s not in exactly the same state or state of mind when we last left him.”
n the episode, Sam (Jared Padalecki) has finally broken down under the pressure of Lucifer’s (Mark Pellegrino) relentless “hell”-lucinations and winds up in a mental hospital. In seeking help, Dean (Jensen Ackles) is led to a healer who looks a lot like their old buddy Castiel (Misha Collins). “I can’t say too much about Dean’s reaction, but it was weird to see that face again for sure,” says Gamble.
It appears that Castiel isn’t the only familiar face hanging out with Dean. The demon Meg Masters (Rachel Miner) has returned after last season’s trip through Purgatory. The last time we saw Meg, she shared a rather heated kiss with Castiel, back when he was still just an angel and not a god or vessel for Leviathans… or whatever he is now.
Meg had also attempted to kill the King of Hell himself, Crowley (Mark Sheppard). “She has been a bit of a free agent and kind of a demon rebel since Crowley took power,” Gamble explains. “She is on Crowley’s most-wanted list, and her situation has not changed. She’s still the enemy of Crowley. When she pops up, she’s kind of looking for allies.”
Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki welcomes a son
Gamble won’t reveal any more details about the episode, but confirms that Supernatural would be more than happy to have Collins back as Castiel, should his presence serve the story. “We actually have left it open-ended enough to have him return,” she says. “That’s all I can say this point. We don’t even have a pickup for Season 8 yet.”
Supernatural airs Fridays at 9/8c on The CW.
