Season 6 – Interview Transcript #02 (Part 2)

Tell me about Death’s Dean?

Well I think one of the things that Supernatural has had a lot of fun with over the years kind of toying with is what a human being reacting – what a fallible human being’s reaction to.

I think one of the things that Supernatural has had a lot of fun doing over the past six seasons is toying with the idea of what a fallible human being’s reaction is to an enormous amount of power both with Sam being given the responsibility and privilege of stopping the apocalypse and having this kind of demonic, bizarre power where he can kill the most powerful demon to Dean being Death for a day.

To, you know, brining people back to life and making a deal. So you see this human struggle of – I mean I think a lot of us have unfortunately lost people and been like man, what I wouldn’t give? Yeah, I’d give ten years to have this person back or to stop this or to reverse time and do this differently and so you kind of, you know, we just toy with the ideas.

Will there be a sacrifice?
So far there’s nothing tangible. I think the real price that he paid for being Death for a day was just that terrible, terrible feeling of well some that have to go should go. You know, this guy who’s robbing a gas station. He’s a jerk but then there’s some that are just losing a family member and it’s an accident and kind of how you deal with that and then it comes to terms and the parallel is now in our lives and what are Sam and Dean doing? Who are we gonna save?

You know, for instance when we do have confrontation with Mitch is that well, does he deserve to die? Is Death in this room? Does he deserve to die? Do we deserve to die? Does, Bobby, whoever? Like what are we really fighting for, what’s the purpose? And so I think, I think another thing that’s done is really given Sam and Dean these, these high ideals and then force them to internalize in such a way that’s kind of enriched the characters over time.

Do you feel ridiculous?

I feel like – well there’s this great story. Once it was, uh, it was Jensen’s birthday. I remember it was March 1st of season four and we were shooting this scene where Sam, he’s like, uh, I think he needs more demon power because we’re gonna get killed. But anyway while they’re setting up the shot Jensen and I were watching Shawshank Redemption in my trailer. We’re like sitting there kind of hanging out, chatting and Shawshank Redemption is on.

It’s the scene where like Tim Robbins comes out and he frees himself from prison and he’s there and he calls and stands up and then he goes and meets Red on the beach. And we’re both sitting there and it’s getting a little dusty in the trailer and then there’s a knock on the door and it’s our first – I’m sorry it’s the second AD. He’s like hey, Jared we’re ready for you on set. I go all right, I’m coming and we look at each other and I was like pointing to Shawshank and I was like and this is the reason why I became an actor.

Now pardon me while I go suck the blood from the neck of a demon. What’s going on? So it’s absolutely funny but I think we set out – I think wonderfully we kind of knew what we were in store for. I mean we set out with my girlfriend and mom burning on a ceiling and a woman in white appearing in a car. So we knew that we were telling it in this fantasy way.

But the point was that it deals with universals and archetypes and going back to Joseph Campbell mythology and like the friendly beast and good versus evil and wrong versus right and ultimate power versus ultimate self sacrifice so it’s these wonderful high deals that we get to, that we get to toy around with and to play with and to go like hey, let’s do things this way. You know, let’s do it an off episode and have fun, like laugh at ourselves and so it’s been this really nice more than 120, 130 episodes into this, uh, saga.

And we’ve gotten a chance to play with a lot of ideas and as an actor you put yourself into your character’s position. It’s the only way you can do what you’re required to do so I feel like Jensen and I have both learned a lot about ourselves by just playing with these ideas. And it’s not about well when I get possessed by Lucifer some day like this is what I’ll learn from. But you’re like oh, I want – okay, well let me see.

What is being Lucifer like? Being Lucifer is an angel cast down. Okay, so it’s someone who’s dealing with their brother being the family favorite and takes himself – so you kind of just toy with these right and you’re like oh, I see. I see how this is wrong or something else. Oh, I see how this is kind of right and I see how it feels right to do something right for somebody else selflessly and, you know, take one on the chin but you’ll heal and they’ll have something better to show for themselves.

So it’s been a fun, it’s been a fun ride but certainly a funny way to – it’s funny when I talk to like my wife’s parents or when I meet somebody. Often times I’ll be at a bar or a restaurant and go hey, may I really like your show, can I take a picture? Sure and we take a picture and the person next to them is like who are you? I’m like well I’m an actor. Oh, what do you do? I’m in this show called Supernatural. Oh, what’s it about? Well, uh, how much time you got? And so it’s a funny, uh, it’s a funny position to be in but I feel very blessed.

What’s gonna happen next?

Well that’s, that’s – I think I love, I think I love to know the same question. I think a lot of it has to deal with whether or not we find out whether we are or not going for another season. As you know the show’s been picked up for six years and we’re four episodes being done with six years so I have a feeling that, uh, that if we don’t get the good news then we’ll have to kind of wrap it up and good luck to the writers trying to wrap up six years in a few shows.

So you want more?

I’d like to see more, yeah. I mean I think we’re in this fun part where we’ve told a few stories and we set out to sell this initial arc that kind of took place over five years and we told it and we got it done and now in sixth season kind of started this new arc. And I think it’s a lot of fun and I think we’re having a great time and I love the character and I think about myself playing the character so I’d like to see it go some more.

Tell me about the fans.

I guess it’s all perception. I guess it’s what you choose to gain from your experiences but Jensen and I are actually really in touch with our fans. We don’t – either of us, neither of us Facebook or Twitter or do anything interactive on a day to day basis but we do these conventions regularly. In fact I have one in a week in Los Angeles and we have some in the summer and so we have this chance to interact one on one with the fans and we do private greets and massive interviews on stage in front of hundreds of people.

And it’s nice to see this. It really reignites our passion for the project because it’s not like we work so hard up here in Vancouver that we forget sometimes that what we’re doing is kind of cool. And like it’s exciting conversation and, and topics and intense and passion arguments and high topic ideals. You know, like oh, wow and you’re with these people that are watching it from an outsider’s perspective and they ask some brilliant questions and they say some brilliant things.

And we kind of look at each other and we’re like dude, I never even thought about it like that. Like that’s so cool. We’ll be on the flight back sometimes and we’ll be like hey, remember when Rachel said this or remember when Becky said that? And you’re kind of like oh, cool and so that’s been really nice and there haven’t been too crazy of a situations for me. Luckily because we’re such a cult show it’s not like people just bizarrely come up to me and go like Justin Bieber.

Do that again.

Justine Bieber, oh, my god. Yeah, they don’t – there’s not some bizarre, wacky like I’m walking around with a folder up above my head so I can’t – usually people know who I am. It’s because they know my work which is brilliant because as an actor that’s what you want. I hope that’s what you want. I don’t want to be like hey, I’m best abs on television.

Like I live in the Jersey Shore. Like famous to be famous or famous because you punch a guy in a bar or something. It’s like people are like hey, I just saw this scene or I just saw like – that’s so cool. My wife and I – hey, hey, blah, blah. Like what do you think about – I’m like oh, wow I’m having a conversation with a human being about like my work. Like that’s really rare and interesting and cool.

And so, uh, so I kind of have this, this maybe I’m seeing it through rose colored glasses but I have this wonderful view of our fans and the fandom and they’re so intense and they’ve, they’ve kept our show running for six years and so I owe them a lot but I think they think they owe me a lot. But it’s one of those – it’s a nice ever relationship where I get from them what they get from me. So it’s been really nice.

What has the show given you?

Well, uh, the show’s, the show’s in its sixth year so I mean that’s, you know, I started the show when I was in my mid 20s and now I’m in my early 30s so, you know, there’s just in that, you know, age range there’s a lot of growing that happens. You know, I’m – I feel like I’ve matured a ton since we first started the show. Whether or not that’s due to the show, you know, or just life in general but, you know, I’m now married.

You know, I’ve, you know, kind of, kind of growing up quite a bit. You know, the show, uh, the show has afforded me a lot of great benefits, a lot of French benefits. So it’s, you know, yeah, more well read. You know, instead of watching, you know, reality television I’m doing crosswords now but I don’t know if that’s just maturing as an adult or if that has anything to do with the show, I don’t know. You know, I’m, I’m very, I know I’m very fortunate to have a job and to be on a show that is this successful is a big blessing, so.

Tell me about the fans.

I mean, you know, it’s – I tell you what is interesting about this day and age and, you know, fandom sort of speak is the internet. And it really has changed the relationship between, you know, the entertainment industry and the fans that watch it and that’s that it’s given the fans a very large voice. And the influence that the fans can have on these message boards and these, you know, blogs and whatever it is has really kind of been felt I think as an actor on the show by the people who create this show.

I mean the writers are very in tune with what the fans are saying and I think it has a lot to do with just the outlet that they can say it. So I think the fact that we do have very fanatical fans gives that even a more of an influence and it’s interesting because, you know, the writers talk about well we can do this, we can bring this character in but we better get rid of this character because the fans are hating that character.

Well before it was really up to the writers, you know. They made the decisions on and so it’s, it’s like and I’ve asked the writers. I’m like who’s writing the show? Is it you guys or the fans just submitting ghost scripts? Yeah, uh, so but the good is, is that, you know, the fans have stuck in there and they still apparently like what we’re doing and it’s, uh, and they are, you know, they’re very, they’re very avid fans and they love the show and it’s been great and, you know, without them we wouldn’t have a job, so.

How is to be in Vancouver?

Well there’s about three people in this town and and they’re all outside.

Do you know your fans by name?

I don’t know if I know their names but I do know – I definitely know them. I’ll be like I signed like 19 pictures for you. You can’t possibly need any more.

The fans want more?

Yeah, so they’re turning around and selling them and making a profit but, you know, that’s a whole other discussion. It isn’t, uh, it isn’t Los Angeles in that regard and I think that, I think that in LA it is a lot different on a few different levels. One, I think people are a bit desensitized by the majority of, you know, it’s like oh, there is, you know, Richard Gere. Oh, there is, you know, Brad Pitt. You know, there’s, oh, there’s Christian Bale getting coffee with his daughters.

It’s not, it’s not an uncommon thing and for here it’s – I would say the people although very, you know, very laid back and very relaxed and very, you know, non aggressive at all might come back and be like hey, you know, I’m a big fan of your work. And they’re always very nice and stuff but I would never get that in LA but on the flipside in LA you have this crazed paparazzi scene.

You know, you’ve got the TMZ and all the entertainment shows and they need their footage so what do they do? Go to LA and follow people around and wait for them to punch you. You know, they’re looking for that story where as here like I said there’s a small handful of guys and for the most part they’re very respectful. So it’s, you know, we’re lucky in the fact that we don’t have to deal with that and we’ve been up here for six years and not have to deal with it. And I’m very happy that I’m not on, you know, TMZ or the rag magazines. It’s, uh, I don’t know that anybody really enjoys being on those except for the people that rely on it.

Who does Jensen root for?

For the Super Bowl I am, uh, I’m rooting for Green Bay.

Two for two.

You know, I’m from Dallas and unfortunately my boys did not do very well this year. They had some problems, they had some issues.

Quarterback problems.

And what really was bad was the fact that they were actually one of the favorites going into this season and it was so exciting because we were having the Super Bowl in Dallas this year and it was like oh, wouldn’t it be great to be the first team to actually host the Super Bowl at home? But that didn’t happen.

So, I, uh, you know, I think, I think I’m going for Green Bay literally because, uh, I’m just sick of seeing Pittsburg go to the Super Bowl and nothing wrong with Pittsburg. I’ve actually filmed a movie there a few years ago. Great city but, you know, I’m – I’d like to see Aaron Rogers kind of pull it off. He’s, he’s really impressed me over the past two seasons.

Are you sad that you can’t be in Dallas?

I am for several reasons. One, that I don’t get to, you know, hang out with my family. Two, that I wouldn’t be there to tailgate with my buddies at the stadium. But I think that the, uh, that if I was there I wouldn’t make it back to work on Monday because the runways are frozen over.
