Supernatural’s Mark Sheppard: Is Crowley really the devil on Castiel’s shoulder?

Supernatural may only have a few episodes to go before its sixth season finale, but it seems there are still a lot of unanswered questions, are we right? Maybe even more so than any season prior, especially with the somewhat shocking return of Crowley (Mark Sheppard) and the revelation that he and Castiel (Misha Collins) have actually been working together this whole time we thought he was gone for good. Say it ain’t so!?

Well, we had a chance to chat with Sheppard today to try to get him to set the record straight about quite a few things. He didn’t want to spoil too much, noting a bit cheekily that half the fun is that surprise of seeing something you never expected play out on-screen. And Supernatural is certainly known for that (after all, no one ever seems to truly stay dead over there!), so we can definitely expect a few twists and turns still to come.

Sheppard kept the secret of Crowley’s return for a long time!

“It was such a relief to be able to actually admit that I was back on Supernatural [because] even before I died, I knew I was coming back. But there was a plan that Sera and Bob and Eric and Phil and everybody, you know, we tried to work out the best way that this could happen. And I think it’s a testament to Warner Brothers and Supernatural that we got away with it pretty well. I got paparazzi photographed in the Vancouver airport a couple of times, but nobody had any idea that I was in 6.19, and I was so pleased we were able to make that happen.”

Sheppard wouldn’t spill exactly what Crowley’s motives for torturing souls are, or even that he’s definitely spent his time doing that, but regardless: what you see isn’t always what you get.

“We are finally going to discover that he is, in fact, the Easter Bunny. [Laughs] No, listen, [“The Man Who Would Be King”] is going to give you a very good idea on where Crowley is and what Crowley is doing. I think you’ll have a much better understanding of where this might be going, of Crowley and Castiel’s relationship, assuming they have had a relationship. That is, of course, if it’s all true.”

What if the deal with Grandpa Samuel wasn’t what we thought? What if Crowley isn’t what we thought?

“That’s an interesting thought…The one thought that I’ve been dwelling on more than anything else recently, of my own volition, is that ‘Isn’t it fascinating that you’ve never seen Crowley’s eyes flash red’?”

[Editor’s note: Or white. Hmm…just how powerful is Crowley??]

Crowley may be the King of Hell right now, but bad is in the eye of the beholder.

“I don’t consider him a bad guy at all in the context of a bad guy. He believes in what he believes in, and he’s very honest.”

Crowley came back from the dead before, so he could again in season seven, but Sheppard has some other plans for him, too.

“I’ve always wanted to do a sitcom called “Oh, Crowley! … Or how about Crowley as a replacement for Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men?”

Supernatural makes the actors, as well as the fans, think twice about heaven and hell.

“It certainly has made me think about it a lot more than I used to, being on a show like this. I think it’s fascinating! To go back into the Bible that I know and actually just re-explore these situations in the context of a TV show has been really interesting.”

The best part about being on a show like Supernatural for Sheppard is the fan response.

“I am unbelievably grateful that the character has resonated in this way with the fans. It’s an honor to be a part of that. I know that you, as well as everybody else, can’t wait to see what happens. I’m excited. I know that whatever I may have done or may do on the show, I haven’t seen all of everything; I haven’t seen it all completely realized in that way. And then when it broadcasts, when the show comes on-air, it’s so much fun to watch, and it’s just as much fun to talk with the fans after. I have so much fun on Twitter!

“I come from live theatre and live music before that, so you get an interesting crowd experience, whether you’re playing for fourteen people or seventy-thousand people. That instant response is missing from us in television. I can go to a movie theater and watch a movie I was in with an audience…but with television, the opportunity to meet the fans at Comic Con or any other situation, it’s a chance to enter that circle; it’s that sharing. I don’t come to your house and watch it, but it’s that beginning to talk about it.”

So, yes, Sheppard IS on Twitter, and he encourages fan interaction and encouragement, but he’s still not too sure about live-Tweeting his big episode.

“Bring it on! Twitter me anything you want. Sign up; you have to send me a request; and I’ll click yes. It’s definitely worth it.”

Okay, so clearly it is still a bit of a puzzle to figure out just what will go down in “The Man Who Would Be King” (assuming you’re unlike Sheppard and do actually want to decipher the mystery now. But look at the clues Sheppard dropped in the interview and leave your thoughts in the comments!

And even if Sheppard can’t be convinced to live-Tweet, you can always follow along with LA TV Insider Examiner when we will during the local Los Angeles (9pm PT) airing of each new Supernatural episode!
